Only 20yrs left for trimix??
According to a top Professor at university there is only a 20 year supply of Helium remaining-hence the cost of Helium. I guess that this is already common knowledge, but I just thought I’d spread the word.
The physicists amongst us will know how Helium is formed and since I study physics I will tell you. Helium is formed when radioactive materials undergo spontaneous decay- radioactive decay. When the decay takes place an “alpha” particle is emitted. And it is this “alpha” particle that is a Helium nucleus. So deep underground where we still have radioactive rock. Helium has been building up over millions of years. But the worlds scientific community are using Helium in a big way to study all sorts of phenomena including superconductivity. If you have been unfortunate to have an MRI scan. There is a good chance that the magnet you went through was cooled using liquid Helium.
I would think that the trimix divers will be priced out of the market long before the supply runs out.
So everyone get your thinking caps on. The trimix divers need a cheap alternative gas for trimix..

Yeah I worked on a satellite caled Herschel which is launching next year and will take the worlds stockpile of He3 with it

You won’t be taking all the 3He - we use it at work too. Far to dear to use in scuba though, so as divers we wouldn’t lose out.
4He is another matter though - prices are going up and up each year!

In the offshore diving industry we go through thousands of cubic metres of helium per month, per vessel around the world. When it starts getting in really short supply the price will go so high that only oil companies (our clients) will be able to foot the bill.
